The Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) is celebrating 50 years contribution to Australia's film and television history with a landmark conference, exhibition and golden anniversary awards ceremony.
"Mary and Max" is one of the most eagerly anticipated Australian feature films in recent years. Due for release in 2009, "Mary and Max" combines an innovative and integrated digital workflow all the way from the animatic or digital storyboard to delivery.
ACS50 Conference attendees will hear how Melodrama Pictures, in collaboration with partner companies Stop Motion Pro and XDT, have built world-class custom software and digital technologies to produce the claymation feature film at a budget level and speed, far eclipsing conventional film animation methods.
In a two-part presentation, covering acquisition and post-production, key-crew members and representatives of the partner companies will deliver an overview of the crucial considerations and digital processes in use.
Gerald Thompson, "Mary and Max" Director of Photography, will feature in a video presentation where he will talk of his experience using flicker-free lighting techniques, lightweight robot motion control rigs, and in-camera effects to shoot over 9 stages.
In a world-first, hear how "Mary and Max" use the latest generation Canon 1D Mark III Digital SLR still image cameras incorporating Canon's new Live-View feature to capture 4K raw images using Stop Motion Pro HD Studio. This acquisition method is now also currently in use on the new "Wallace and Gromit" TV half-hour "A Matter of Loaf or Death" produced by Aardman Animations.
In the second part of the presentation, Erik Otto, Managing Director, XDT, Gavin Stewart, Head of R&D, XDT, and Henry Karjalainen, "Mary and Max" Post Production Producer, will demonstrate how an understanding of existing motion-picture techniques are innovatively applied to process the Canon raw images at speed, maximum quality, and flexibility, ready for all subsequent review, editing, digital effects, archival and delivery stages.
